EDWARD JENNER (1749–1823)
In the 1790s, to the horror of the medical establishment and the press, Edward Jenner inoculated children with pus from diseased cows and went on to prove that this prevented the children from contracting the dreaded smallpox.
JOHN SNOW (1813–58)
John Snow proved in 1850 that an outbreak of cholera in London had been caused by unclean water from a public pump, resulting in fundamental changes to the provision of water and waste removal in London and other cities around the world.
